Böbi, King of Rigi

After he walked with us to the Zurich Airport, Dad took a train to Goldau and went for a solo hike up Mount Rigi. It was very cold but sunny, and it was not long until he got this great view of Lake Zug from the Goldauerberg plateau.

He had not brought snowshoes, but the snow was hard packed and easy to walk on.

Mount Rigi is known as the Queen of the Swiss Mountains. What most people don't know is that Mount Rigi has her own King.

Meet Hund Böbi, the King of Mount Rigi. On this cold Saturday morning he was headed up to the Dächli hut to get some work done with his dad. Although he was very busy, he promised my dad that he'd send me a doggy-gram,

which I read on Mom's Kindle at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. Mom and I were stuck there all afternoon after missing our flight to Seattle.

From time to time, Dad would stop hiking to touch base with Mom via e-mail with his own Kindle. Amazon's Kindle provides a free 3G data service that's good enough for e-mail and saves us a fortune in communication costs as well as roaming fees when we travel.

The 3G data link between Mount Rigi and Schiphol Airport became history once Dad got above 5,000 ft. Not because of the lack of 3G coverage, but because it was way too cold for any self-respecting chemical reaction inside the Kindle's battery to produce electricity.

By the time Dad made it to the tippy top, the sun and the view were hidden by a layer of fog thicker than hair on a St Bernard's back.

Very different compared to when I was there on Mom's birthday in September!

  1. SHE has a Kindle, but SHE only reads books....doesn't do anything fancy.

We'd love to go on a hike in the snow...we think...we've never been in snow.

  5. I didn't know Kindles were so useful. Mom just uses hers to read! That looks like a little too cold of a hike for me to enjoy, but I'm glad your dad liked it!
