Happy Boxing Day!

This is a picture of me from Boxing Day in 2013! I have a bit more grey on my snout now.

Emily Dickinson's Birthday

Many years ago, Mom and Truffle (my fur brother) visited Emily Dickinson's light. We're posting this photo in honor of Emily Dickinson's birthday, which is December 10th! You can find some of her poems at The Poetry Foundation.

Dachshund and Mother Selfie

Sometimes a cuddle is all that is needed!
Rehab, rehab, rehab, rehab (repeat 18 times for 18 months because of Mom's adhesive capsulitis, shoulder, and knee issues). Then, yesterday Mom and Dachshund Daddy and I climbed a mountain. Only four miles total, but 2000 vertical feet! Our goal: work up to eight, nine, ten miles. Mom didn't make it to the top, though. Her fear of heights stopped her (there was a drop-off on the other side of the ridge), so she sat down to pant and to cuddle me.
Still. A little bit of progress. All-paw drive makes all the difference!

Happy (American) Thanksgiving!

Mom is always homesick for America at this time of year. She's thinking of family and friends, pets and land. We send you all sorts of gratitude and love. Thanks for being good friends. xo

#TBT - We will practice flight until we fly

#tbt - just to last summer, but it was such a happy, free time of flight practice. This is in Val d'Aosta, Italy. The wind is good there.

Tootsie Tuesday: My New Friend

Mom is so upset at all the violence in the world,
so we are focusing on friendship.

This is my new friend.
I named her Ms. Unicorn.

We've spent a lot of quiet time together,
reflecting on goodness,
resisting fear.

Today, we're doing laundry.

Jenn & Mallory & Zippie & Cookie:
Thank you for sending me my new friend.
Love, Tootsie

#NFNOW15

Dear Tootsie,

I am awake at three am. My body still thinks it is Switzerland. Or I can no longer sleep without your sweet nose in my face!

The first day of NonfictioNOW Conference was fantastic. It's incredible to see writing friends from workshops and conferences past (write on) / people who have published me (thank you forever) / and people I'm still shy to approach (fangirl). It's fantastic to listen to so many smart-heart humans talk about spiral investigations on the page. It's an epic trek to arrive anywhere in life, just to be, and I'm so glad I'm being here, right now. Art. Make art.

And I'm so glad Paul Bunyan made it to the conference, too.

Please give Dachshund Daddy a smooch for me.

Love always,
Your Mom

#TBT -- First Swiss Hike Ever

This is Tootsie's first Swiss hike back in 2011! And look, she isn't yet wearing her signature harness. On this hike, our little Tootsie's underarms got so raw, because of the chafing from this crappy PetCo harness. I went online and found the handmade Hug-a-Dog harness from Dachshund Delights the next day.

Greina Plateau, Switzerland

And here's our Sassy Tube of Fur from this past summer. She's decked out in her signature "Hold-a-Dog" harness from Dachshund Delights, she's adapted to Swiss life and bicontinental trips back to Idaho, and she's our treasure.

Thank You, Grandpa

Dear Grandpa,

Thank you so much for making the long trek to visit us in Switzerland. Just this morning, Dachshund Daddy said, "I miss Grandpa!"

Wasn't our first hike to Lake Salei, Switzerland pawsome?

I was so happy to show you the Dolomites in Italy!

And it is totally pawsome that you finally got to meet Dachshund Daddy's family -- and go to the beach where Dachshund Daddy played as a kid!

Here's Verdi's birth place. Why did the Puccini Museum welcome little dogs held in arms, but Verdi's people didn't mention dogs at all?

Please come back, Grandpa. We can take more alpine naps together.

Love,
Your Tube of Fur

Ready for Lantsch?

Thanks to my hikes I often get to discover little Swiss towns way off the beaten track. The town behind us in the photo below is Lantsch, pronounced "Lunch". Yummy!

No, we don't have snow in Switzerland yet. The photo above is from last March. Lantsch has cool murals...

cute little trucks...

and an awesome nature trail where I learned all about prints.

Tootsie Visits the French Alps

Mom: "Since it's a European road trip, shouldn't we visit a castle?"

Dad: "How about a fort? Will a fort do?"

This is Aussois, France where we visited four forts. These are forts from the 1800s when Savoy (now part of France) was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which was worried about a French invasion.

In addition to calling me a "Tube of Fur," Mom has started called me a "brave little baguette" because I'm such a mighty hiker. (She should call herself a baguette... you wouldn't believe how many baguettes Mom ate in France!)

When I Travel...

When I travel, I bring my own bed, my DreamSack. I'm wearing my Hold-a-Dog Harness -- also from Dachshund Delights! I'm a Mighty Hiker and a savvy traveler.

When I sleep, my snores fill the room and ring off the mountainsides.

This is Mom's lunch!
