Letter from Tootsie: My Favorite Places

I am a lucky and savvy Tube of Fur. Here are some of my favorite places where I hike, nap, and snorfle.

The woods in Idaho with my fur-brother Truffle (RIP).

The shores of the Ligurian Sea.

The shores of the Pacific Ocean.

The shores of Lake Pend'Oreille, Idaho.

And let's not forget the mountains. The Alps!

How we love to hike.

But now the world has gone upside down.

Because the USA has elected a man with no morality and no compulsion about lying. We've been told that Trump says what needs saying and that he doesn't mean what he says. But words matter. You don't get it both ways. Those who think they can define his meaning as it suits them have been scammed.

Trump denies that global climate change is an urgent threat to civilization. The Paris accords are dead. This is what the USA has unleashed. This is what the USA has done to the world.

My new anthem.

There is no silver lining to this election. Here's what you can do now:

Consider making a donation to 350.org -- on behalf of climate change. (One example, the most common sentiment to my mom in Switzerland: "What has America done? This affects us all." On the other hand, we have talked to Europeans who think the American elections do not affect them; they are mistaken.)

Consider making a donation to the American Civil Liberties Union -- on behalf of the American constitution.

Consider making a donation to the Southern Poverty Law Center -- on behalf of our sisters and brothers so at risk in America. (Two personal examples from this past weekend -- one friend's daughter had hate speech written on her apartment and her car, and another friend had hate speech written on her campus organization's door with flyers distributed across campus.)

#TBT: My Fur Brother Truffle

Whenever I'm at Grandpa's Idaho Home, I always miss my fur brother Truffle. He let me kiss his ears and lick his jowls and dry hump him all over. Here is Truffle with Mom and a Wisconsin cow during Mom & Truffle's great road trip adventure together back in 2006.

Dachshund air travel

Dachshund air travel can be an enjoyable experience, as long as you keep a low profile. Can you see me here at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport?

Probably not, and that's exactly my point. It's best to stay in your carrier, but you can use your judgment and stretch your legs in low biped density areas.

Be sure to avail yourself of complimentary in-flight entertainment options, especially if dogs have prominent roles. (The movie below is "Absolutely Anything".)

And here's me with Mom and Grandpa at the Spokane airport, en route to my Idaho home.

All of this was in late July; I've been in Idaho since then. It's a working vacation because I'm on a mission to evict the resident rodents from the house. My mission requires the adoption of a nocturnal schedule, which is sometimes at odds with Mom's. There's not much I can do about that.

Happy Fourth of July, America

It's quiet here in Switzerland. Lots of time for reflection and reading. No fireworks!

We Americans have a good Constitution!

These are the legs of Lucy, my Gotcha-Day toy. I killed her squeaker in just ten minutes. My Gotcha-Day was July 1st, which is also Canada Day, but my parental units are so lame they didn't post a picture of me. Still they bought me Lucy, so that's nice.

The U.S.A. has certainly made some mistakes, but today, I'm thinking about how Europe would be very different if we hadn't come over to help in WW2. I worry now about Brexit. That seems like a big mistake to me. The European Union is a bureaucratic behemoth, yes, but it succeeded in keeping Europeans from slaughtering each other, as they'd been doing since the fall of the Roman Empire.

Peace to you all. May you find solace inside your heart rather than inside national borders.

Grandpa's Snow Limerick for the Down Low

In choosing one's path through the snow
It is wise to explore why you go
'Cuz when cold and tired
Or otherwise mired
It's best to be with those you know
--by Tootsie's Grandpa, BGD.
As Grandpa says, "A Great Dane would have a very different snow experience." Here I am with Mom and Grandpa in Idaho.

Emily Dickinson's Birthday

Many years ago, Mom and Truffle (my fur brother) visited Emily Dickinson's light. We're posting this photo in honor of Emily Dickinson's birthday, which is December 10th! You can find some of her poems at The Poetry Foundation.

Happy (American) Thanksgiving!

Mom is always homesick for America at this time of year. She's thinking of family and friends, pets and land. We send you all sorts of gratitude and love. Thanks for being good friends. xo

#NFNOW15

Dear Tootsie,

I am awake at three am. My body still thinks it is Switzerland. Or I can no longer sleep without your sweet nose in my face!

The first day of NonfictioNOW Conference was fantastic. It's incredible to see writing friends from workshops and conferences past (write on) / people who have published me (thank you forever) / and people I'm still shy to approach (fangirl). It's fantastic to listen to so many smart-heart humans talk about spiral investigations on the page. It's an epic trek to arrive anywhere in life, just to be, and I'm so glad I'm being here, right now. Art. Make art.

And I'm so glad Paul Bunyan made it to the conference, too.

Please give Dachshund Daddy a smooch for me.

Love always,
Your Mom

Happy Fourth from the Gotthard

St Gotthard Pass is the most famous mountain pass in the Swiss Alps and is considered one of the symbols of Switzerland. Often referred to as the Gotthard, it sits on the continental divide between the Adriatic Sea watershed and the North Sea watershed. Most travelers use the 10-mile tunnel 3,000 feet below the pass, but connoisseurs prefer to savor this awesome place, which provides easy access to countless alpine lakes and trails.

Today, with my quintessential aerial ears, I'm calling out from the Gotthard to my native country, the United States of America:

 Happy Fourth of July!

#LoveisLove #Equality #LoveWins #Pride2015

Celebrating America.
After pain and tragedy and senseless racial violence, she shines brightly.
So much more work to do. And we are proud of how far we've come.
Plus, Mom and Dad's marriage is a little more real -- now that all can legally marry
in the United States of America, in all fifty states.

Love is Love and Love is Fine.

Now Boarding

Dear Now Boarding,

Thank you so much for taking care of our Tootsie in April while I attended the Associated Writers Program conference in Minneapolis. Tootsie and I had just flown from our home in Switzerland to Minneapolis, and we had never boarded Tootsie, so I was nervous and upset. You were super kind to me when I burst into tears walking down the hallway away from our sweet girl.

Tootsie did great because of your care! Your staff was compassionate, skilled, and professional. We love her "Report Card"; we call it an "Accomplishment Card"!

We really appreciate your care of our Tube of Fur. Thank you.

Much gratitude,
Renee (Tootsie's Mom) & Dachshund Daddy
& Tootsie, too

We Love Oscars Creations - Dachshund Handbags by Cathy

We are so excited about our new travel wallet-purse specially designed and handmade by Cathy Skinner through her Etsy story called Oscars Creations. It is a special order Cathy designed to carry my official Swiss Pet Passport, Mom's passport, and credit cards & cash.

During our international trip last week, it worked beautifully.
Thank you, Cathy.

It was way past time to upgrade from a series of Ziploc baggies Mom had been using as wallets for over seven years!

The design is perfect, so Mom can open it with one hand, which is super imPAWtent when she is using the other arm to manage my travel house (with me inside), keeping me from being bumped by anxious travelers, all while retrieving documents for passport control or to go through security.

We love Cathy's designs. Here's another Handbag by Cathy that Mom owns. Have you noticed all the doxies yet?!

She found this purse through the amazing Dachshund Delights who make the original Hug-a-Dog Harness. I wear the "Hold-a-Dog Harness," which has a handy strap on top -- kind of like a purse!

Cathy also makes a Cross Body Handbag Purse with adorable designs. You can request a special order, like we did, and Cathy will make something just for you.

Please take a look at her fabulous and fun Etsy store, Oscars Creations.

You can also find her on Dachshund Handbags by Cathy on Facebook.

I think Mom is becoming a doxie fashionista!

Love,
Tootsie

Return to Switzerland: Please Send Cawwots

Mom and I are back in Switzerland with Dachshund Daddy! We had a great trip to the United States, our country of origin. Mom did lots of writing events. Thanks to Grandpa for making everything so seamless. Dachshund Daddy loves his homemade banana bread, which Grandpa specially made for him.

Here I am with Grandpa in our gorgeous Idaho woods the day before we caught our flight. Look at the moss! Super soft on my paws.

And here I am all ready to burrow into my bicontinental travel house. Mom says I did awesome in the air! Her seatmates didn't even believe I was there -- all tucked up under the seat in front of Mom. But, oops, I pee'd on Astroturf in the "Small Terrace" roof garden in Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. Sorry! I don't like Astroturf, but I really had to go, and by the way, I think it is terrible that the women soccer players have to play on it instead of real grass during the Women's World Cup in Canada. Another stupid bozo move by those duds who run FIFA.

Dachshund Daddy took us for gelato tonight... across the border in Italy. Well... we all went, but only Mom and Dad were allowed to eat ice cream. And pizza. They had pizza, too!

Would someone send me some cawwots, please? And would someone send Mom and me a cure for jet lag, please? (Nine hour time difference, so for me, breakfast is dinner and dinner is breakfast.)

We miss you, Grandpa!

Love,
Tootsie
