Kronberg

The trail from Schwaegalp to Kronberg in the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland is hailed as one of the Top 12 Swiss hikes in Switzerland.

I'm often wary of highly publicized trails, but Gulliver assured me it is fairly quiet on Saturdays.

Schwaegalp itself was a zoo, because everyone parks there to board the celebrated Säntis cable car. But as far as the Kronberg trail goes, Gulliver was right.

The trail offers fabulous views of the Alpstein mountain range

and a commanding view of the Schwendibach Valley, which we hiked last fall.

Once at the top of Kronberg, the green hills of Appenzell are at your paws. It is not unusual to see some crazy Swiss German paraglider floating around on the thermals.

Kronberg has her own cable car that whisks you down to the town of Jakobsbad. Dogs generally pay half price, but I snuggled up in Mom's arms and got to ride for free. Wotten waven!

  1. Tootsie, what I fantastic walk. And you even got to ride the cable car for free. I am going to show this one to Gail right away. Can you believe that she has just arranged to visit her elderly Swiss godmother in Luzern for a few days in July and she is leaving me behind? Unbelievable. I only weigh 8 kg and would promise to snuggle quietly and discreetly under her jacket on all forms of transport. We'd get past airport security no problem, wouldn't we? (I'm asking you as I know you are an experienced traveller.)
    Toodle pip!

    1. Bertie! I cannot believe she is leaving you behind! She's going to miss you fiercely. I wish I was going to be here in July and that you were coming with Gail because we could do a wotten-waven hike together! Maybe Gail could give us some marsh lessons, too! :)

So... airport security would be no problem. My experience is that airport security becomes ever-so much nicer when a doggy shows up. The problem would be riding onboard, in the cabin, with Gail. Depends on your carrier. KLM and Swiss Air and Darwin Air (God, what a name for an airline) have very strict weight limits for pets in cabin. Delta is more reasonable.

Next time get Gail to bring you, and we'll hope to be here in Swisslandia, and we'll do a hike together!

Where are you going to go when Gail visits her godmother?

      Keep on wagging,
      Tootsie

  5. GruffHello Tootsie! Loved your pictures, we all love trail walking (Daddy2Legs prefer the Fells/Hills, poor Mummy2Legs struggles with these!) - didn't you do well up high like that, a fabulous 4Leg flying you were in the cable car! Take care, Barnie x

  6. Doggies can ride cable cars in Switzerland. Of course. Sigh. Another reason to get jealous of your wottten waven life, Tootsie. Don't you have fear of wobbly things that are high up though? You look pretty calm.

  7. That is so beautiful. I like the picture with the snow in it best. Sort of cooled me off in this heat wave.

My human sister has a friend who is marrying a swiss banker and they will be living there! Maybe someday we can visit that beautiful place and hike where you hike. *sigh*

Fantastic views, a friendly terrier pal, snowy freshness, and a free cable car ride. This was a particularly charmed walk. Only thing missing I can think of is Appenzeller cheese, which my mom tells me would be a lovely stinky treat for a doxie. (Mom had it when she was in Switzerland WITHOUT ME, a rare moment when she failed to put priority on one of the dogs' whims over her own.)
    Thanks for sharing!
